Apple's A20 Pro Brings the First 2-Nanometer Chip to an iPhone

Apple used its September 9 iPhone event — the first led by new CEO John Ternus — to unveil the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and a foldable iPhone, all built around the A20 Pro, Apple's first 2-nanometer chip in a phone.

Apple says the shrink delivers up to 40% faster GPU performance and roughly 20% faster CPU performance versus the A19 Pro, paired with a 7-core GPU, a 32-core Neural Engine, and a claimed 50% jump in memory bandwidth. It follows Apple's M6 chip, revealed weeks earlier, which was the company's first 2nm silicon overall.

The move puts Apple ahead of most of the smartphone industry on process node, at a moment when the company is otherwise leaning on hardware — rather than an in-house frontier AI model — to make its case in the AI era.
