OpenAI Shuts Down the Sora API, Leaving Video App Developers Without a Path Forward

Sep 29, 2026 · by Omeed · 39 reads 0 likes

OpenAI switched off the Sora 2 API on September 24, 2026, cutting the programming interface that let third-party developers generate video with the Sora 2 and Sora 2 Pro models inside their own applications — and leaving no official successor or migration path in place.

The move follows the shutdown of the standalone Sora web and mobile app back in April 2026. OpenAI has pointed to unsustainable compute costs, a strategic pivot toward AI agents and robotics, and controversy over deepfake-style videos of public figures as factors behind winding the product down, alongside revenue that reportedly never matched the resources the video model demanded.

With Sora's API gone, developers who had built video-generation features around it are now looking at alternatives such as Kling AI from Kuaishou and Luma's Ray 2, both of which remain available via their own APIs — though neither offers a drop-in replacement for teams that had built specifically around Sora's output style and tooling.
